Mammalian Physiology

What is it?

Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic condition characterized by pain coming from the trigeminal nerve. It is often described as stabbing, lancinating or electrical in sensation. The pain travels through the face in a matter of seconds, but as the condition progresses, the pain can last minutes and even longer. Pain episodes are usuady triggered by certain actions or stimuli, such as chewing taline, or even lieht touch to the face

Risk Factors

  • Advanced age

  • Multiple Sclerosis

  • High blood pressure

  • Smoking

  • Benign or malignant tumors

  • Strokes or cerebral hemorrhages

  • Trauma to the face or head,

Treatment

  1. Nerve blocks: Local anesthetic injections to numb the trigeminal nerve.

  2. Radiofrequency ablation: Heat-based therapy to disrupt pain signals.

  3. Gamma Knife radiosurgery: Precisely targeted radiation to the trigeminal nerve.

  4. Microvascular decompression surgery: Relieves pressure on the nerve by repositioning blood vessels.
